Job Description |
A Workers' Compensation Defense Firm with a friendly, welcoming culture is seeking a workers' compensation claims defense attorney. This is a fine culture for a lawyer with one year to more than a decade of workers' comp defense experience or someone newly licensed with a strong interest in workers' compensation defense.
This is a small and growing firm. One office is in the Inland Empire and the other in Orange County. Lawyers can work remotely in their own home-offices, and most do. But one can choose to work in one of the offices a lot of the time or just some of the time. The choice is flexible.
The firm has seven lawyers presently and is ambitious to add more lawyers one at a time. Can see getting to 20 lawyers one day in the future, so there's opportunity. Of course, there are paralegals, a hearing rep, and other administrative professionals.
Firm members are cordial, like each other and have positive energy. Four of the lawyers have been with the firm for over 10 years. There are two partners and they schedule lunch together for the whole team every two months or so.
Lawyers do their billable time in Merus Case Management. The caseload one takes on is flexible. An attorney can handle a light load of 50 to 70 files; or one can take on a heavy load of 90 to 100 files; or somewhere in between. Naturally compensation is adjusted accordingly, and salaries are commensurate with experience, and the going rates relative for defense attorneys in California.
The firm works for insurance carriers like the Hartford, Travelers, and NStar; also it works for Third Party Administrators like Sedgwick; and then self-insured, self-administereds.
Attorneys appear at hearings, conferences, and trials before the WCAB. These can often be done remotely. Attorneys take depositions-- of applicant and medical experts -- analyze medical-legal reports (QME-AME), and prepare case strategies. Communication is done with claims examiners and clients regarding case status and recommendations.
Work includes draft pleadings, discovery, motions, and settlement documents; evaluate exposure, permanent disability, apportionment, and settlement value.
Of course, a candidate must be an active member in good standing with the California State Bar. There are bonus opportunities, and benefits such as health insurance, paid time off, holidays, bar dues, CLE allowance, and 401 K .
